First things first - learn to Two-Step. Not all “Two-Step Lessons” are created equal. There are some tourist traps out there, beware.

The most popular dance in Austin is Honky-Tonk Two-Step. This is NOT Traditional Progressive Texas Two-Step or Ballroom Country Two-Step. This is local dialect that blends in a lot of swing. It’s best described as “Swing in the Style of Twp-Step”.

3. KNOW THY BANDS (AND TIP THEM HEAVILY)

The number one thing any Austin Honky-Tonker worth their salt will tell you is this -

the ONLY reason we have this wildy unique opportunity to dance to live music at 5-10 places a day is 100% because of the Austin Live Music Scene.

This includes musicians and bands first and foremost, plus the venues and businesses that support them.

Go out and pay the $5-10 to see a local musician perform live. If it’s for you, you’ll know it right away. Bring cash. Put another $5 in the tip jar. Follow them on social media and tell a friend about the show. Do this again when you’re ready to dive a little deeper.

A little HISTORY of our dance scene

Austin’s legendary live music scene started gaining momentum in the 1960s and ’70s, with iconic venues like the Armadillo World Headquarters leading the charge. By 1991, the city made it official, claiming the title of “Live Music Capital of the World.”

The dance scene in Austin really took off in the 1980s, back when big dance halls—most of them now gone—were packed with two-steppers, waltzers, & jitterbuggers. As the scene shifted into smaller dive bars and honky-tonks, so did the dancing. That’s when our Austin-specific blend of swing and two-step really took shape.

It’s this unique, small-space version we love so much—and truly, what could be more Austin than dancing to the beat of our own drum?
