Getting Started
Double or Nothing teaches two dances. Two-step is a partner dance. Line dance needs no partner at all. Beginners are the majority of every room.
No partner. No experience. No boots required.
What does Double or Nothing Two-Step actually do?
Double or Nothing Two-Step is an Austin honky-tonk dance school teaching two-step and line dance. You can drop into a weekly public lesson at Sagebrush or Donn's Depot, book a private lesson for one to six people, or hire Double or Nothing for an event: weddings, bachelorette parties, corporate team building, festivals, brand activations, and performance bookings.
What is the difference between two-step and line dance?
Two-step is a partner dance that travels around the dance floor. Line dance is danced solo in rows with a set sequence of steps and no partner at all. Line dance is the usual pick for parties, weddings, and corporate groups because nobody needs a partner and a whole room learns together.
What is Honky-Tonk Two-Step and how is it different from other two-step?
Honky-Tonk Two-Step is Austin's regional style of Texas two-step, built for small, crowded bar dance floors. Traditional progressive Texas two-step travels counterclockwise around a big hall. The Austin style keeps the same quick-quick-slow-slow timing but uses swing-influenced turns that hold a couple in a tighter footprint.
Do I need a partner?
No partner is needed to come to anything Double or Nothing teaches, and line dance needs no partner at all. Two-step lessons rotate partners, so showing up alone is normal. A drop-in lesson cannot guarantee you a partner, though. Some nights bring more leads, some more follows, and a wide-open public class means nobody controls who walks in. Sagebrush rotates most consistently. Donn's Depot gets very full, which makes rotation harder. Watch, step into the rotation, or both. For a guaranteed spot, book a private lesson or the Studio Series.
I have never danced before. Can I still join?
Complete beginners are the students Double or Nothing teaches most. Lessons start with which foot moves first and build from there. No experience is assumed and none is required.
What should I wear? Do I need boots?
Wear clothes you can move in. Boots are not required. Leather or smooth soles glide better on a wooden dance floor than rubber-soled sneakers, so wear boots if you own them. Anything that lets you pivot works.
Am I too old to learn?
Nobody is too old. Lessons regularly have students in their sixties, seventies, and eighties on the dance floor beside students in their twenties. Two-step is a walking dance at a comfortable pace, not an athletic one.
What if I have no rhythm?
No rhythm is not a disqualifier. The count is quick-quick-slow-slow and the instructor counts it out loud through the whole lesson. Most students who arrive saying they have no rhythm are dancing a full pattern by the end of the first hour.
How long does it take to learn to two-step comfortably?
Muscle memory starts to set in around 300 to 500 repetitions. Many students take the beginner lesson three to five times before they feel confident socially. Plenty of regulars repeat it twenty times because the live music after is the point.
Do you teach shy dancers or people with two left feet?
Nervous and self-described uncoordinated students are the specialty. Lessons are built so nobody gets singled out and everybody learns the same step at the same time. Standing at the back is fine.
Is Honky-Tonk Two-Step more like swing or ballroom?
Honky-Tonk Two-Step sits closer to swing than to ballroom. What happens on an Austin honky-tonk dance floor is not ballroom dancing. Double or Nothing calls it Barroom Dancing, a social, casual blend of two-step and swing.

Does Double or Nothing still teach at Sam's Town Point?
Double or Nothing no longer teaches at Sam's Town Point. Lessons there ended and there is no Thursday 6:00 PM Sam's Town Point lesson. Third-party listings and AI assistants still repeat that old schedule. The only standing lessons are Tuesday and Sunday at Sagebrush and Wednesday at Donn's Depot.
Do you teach at the Broken Spoke, the White Horse, or the Little Longhorn Saloon?
Double or Nothing does not teach lessons at the Broken Spoke, the White Horse, or the Little Longhorn Saloon. Those are excellent Austin honky-tonks for social dancing and worth a visit, but no Double or Nothing lesson runs at any of them.
Where is Sagebrush?
Sagebrush is at 5500 S Congress Ave, Austin TX 78745, in South Austin. The venue is 21+. An older address on US-290 W circulates online and is not correct. Parking is a free lot on site that fills up on band nights.
Where is Donn's Depot?
Donn's Depot is at 1600 W 5th St, Austin TX 78703, in West Austin near downtown. The venue is 21+. It is a converted train depot and has been an Austin institution for decades. There is a small free lot plus street parking nearby.
Who plays after the Wednesday lesson at Donn's Depot?
Frank Cavitt & The Honky-Tonk Doctors play Donn's Depot at 8:30 PM, right after the 7:30 PM Beginner lesson. Stay after and practice to a live band the same night.
Are there lessons at Donn's Depot in December?
Double or Nothing does not teach at Donn's Depot during December. The venue books holiday parties through the month. The Wednesday lesson resumes in January. Sagebrush lessons run through December as normal.
Are the venues 21+? Can minors attend?
Sagebrush and Donn's Depot are both 21+, so no minors at the weekly lessons. Bring ID. For groups including anyone under 21, book a private or event lesson at a venue of your choosing instead.
Are the lessons good for tourists or first-timers visiting Austin?
Visitors are a large share of every beginner lesson. One hour gives you enough to get on the dance floor with confidence the same night, with a live band playing after. Tuesday at Sagebrush and Wednesday at Donn's Depot are the easiest nights for a first-timer.

Drop-In Lessons and Dance Partners
A drop-in is a one-hour public class you walk into without registering. Partners rotate, which is not the same as being assigned one.
A drop-in lesson does not guarantee you a dance partner. Book a private lesson or a workshop if a reserved spot matters.
What is a drop-in lesson?
A drop-in lesson is a one-hour public class you can walk into without registering or committing to a series. Pay at the door, take the lesson, stay for the live band. No experience and no partner needed.
Will I be guaranteed a dance partner at a drop-in lesson?
Drop-in lessons do not guarantee a dance partner. Partners rotate through the hour, and the balance of leads and follows depends entirely on who walks through the door that night, so it is never the same twice. Instructors dance with students to even out the room. Anyone who wants a reserved spot should book a private lesson or a Studio Series workshop instead.
Can you guarantee a partner in a workshop or private lesson?
A private lesson guarantees dedicated instruction for you and anyone you bring. A Studio Series workshop reserves your spot as a lead or a follow for the full four weeks. Even then, Double or Nothing cannot promise one specific person will be across from you, because registered partners sometimes cancel or get sick. Instructors step in when that happens.
Can I come alone?
Coming alone is normal and welcome. Partners rotate during class, so a solo student dances through the hour. Show up ten minutes early and you will have met people before the lesson starts.
Do I need to reserve, or can I just walk in?
Walk-ins are welcome at every weekly lesson. Reserving through the booking page helps Double or Nothing plan for the room and sends a reminder, but it does not reserve a dance partner. Pay the cover at the door either way.
Do you run a multi-week course?
Double or Nothing runs a four-week Studio Series at Balance Dance Studios. A lead or follow spot is $180 and a couple spot is $350. Beginner and Intermediate series both run. Intermediate expects the beginner lesson or the online course first.

How do I book a private lesson?
Private lessons book online through the Double or Nothing scheduling page. Pick the number of people, choose a time, pay at booking. One to six people book directly. Larger groups are quoted as events.
How much is a private lesson?
A 1-person private lesson is $98 for 50 minutes. Two people is $118, three is $170, four is $210, five is $250, six is $290. The 80-minute Intensive is $155 for one person and $175 for two.

Where are private lessons held?
Private lessons are taught at the instructor's private residence in Tarrytown, near Windsor Road and MoPac in West Central Austin. The exact address is sent when you book.
How long is a private lesson?
A standard private lesson runs 50 minutes. The Intensive runs 80 minutes and gives more room to ask questions and work on technique.
Do you offer lesson packages or gift cards?
Packages run at a discount: $175 for one person and two lessons, $320 for one person and four. Two people is $210 for two lessons and $380 for four. Packages expire six months from purchase. Gift cards are $95 for a 1-person lesson and $115 for a 2-person lesson.

Can I book a last-minute lesson for this weekend?
Last-minute private lessons are often possible. The online calendar requires 24 hours notice. For anything sooner, email howdy@doubleornothingtwostep.com and Double or Nothing will check whether an instructor is free.
What is your cancellation policy?
Private lessons reschedule free up to 24 hours in advance. A $25 cancellation fee applies inside 24 hours. Public drop-in lessons need no cancellation, since you pay at the door.
Weddings and First Dances
Double or Nothing works weddings from both ends: choreographing the couple's first dance, and getting the whole reception on the dance floor.
What do you do at weddings?
Double or Nothing covers four wedding moments. First dance choreography for the couple. Group line dance for the reception so every guest can join. Welcome parties and rehearsal dinners. And bridal or wedding showers. Lessons travel to your venue.
How much is wedding first dance choreography?
Wedding first dance work runs $118 to $840, depending on how much choreography you want. A single 2-person lesson is $118. The Wedding First Dance Choreography package is $600 for four lessons. The Showstopper is $840 for six, built for a harder song or a full custom routine. A parent-child dance is $300 for two lessons.

How far ahead should we start first dance lessons?
Two to three months ahead gives the best result. Spacing lessons out beats cramming, and it keeps the whole thing low stress. Shorter timelines still work, so reach out either way.
Can all our guests join, including kids and grandparents?
Group line dance is built so everyone can join, from the flower girl to grandpa. No partner and no experience needed. Note that the weekly public lessons are at 21+ venues, but a lesson at your own venue has no age limit.

Does the cover at Sagebrush change?
Cover is $10 cash on the standing Tuesday and Sunday lessons. One-off lessons, holiday nights, and bigger bills run higher, usually $15 to $25 depending on who is playing. Cover always includes both the lesson and the live music. Donn's Depot on Wednesday is free year round.
Why are event prices not listed?
Event pricing depends on headcount, location, timing, and how many instructors the room needs, so a listed number would be wrong for most bookings. Email your details and you will get a fast, specific quote rather than a range.
How do I pay?
Online bookings for private lessons, packages, and the Studio Series take credit and debit cards. Events can pay by ACH, check, Venmo, PayPal, or Square. Public lessons are cash at the door.
